Zoe’s Journey Into The World Of Movement

Children run and dance for the love of movement, a celebration of what their bodies can do, regardless of how it looks or compares to others. Yet as we grow up, we are raised with the understanding that movement is either a punishment or a means to an end—a way to fit into the expectation of what our bodies should look like. We all have different physical barriers and backgrounds, yet we can all benefit from finding movement our bodies respond positively to. It is my goal to help folks of all abilities and backgrounds connect to their bodies and celebrate their own strength.

I spent most of my adolescence and young adulthood valuing my body by how much space it physically occupied. My first entry into movement was purely focused on ‘fitness’ and the idea of optimizing my size and shape within the conventional understandings of beauty and worth. Daily runs, focused purely on how many calories I burned, became an essential part of my routine. However, this style of training quickly took its toll on my body. It wasn’t until an injury forced me onto the weight room floor that I began to see my body as capable of being more than my size.

“We are born into a culture that places excessive value on the physical appearance of a person - for feminine socialized folk, we’re expected to be thin, yet with curves, toned, but not overly muscular. For masculine socialized folk, the expectation is placed on height, muscle mass, broadness of shoulders, etc. The culture of fitness and dieting has created an image of well-being based purely on these aesthetic ideals, which cannot be obtained by many without unhealthy eating and movement habits.”

Initially, I saw strength training as a means to control my body's appearance—just another tool for that purpose. However, as I got stronger and more agile, I discovered a profound connection with my body, unlike anything I had experienced before. I could finally feel and identify the various muscles in my back, take pride in my strong core, and rely on my arms and legs for endurance without much trouble. This newfound connection taught me to treat my body with love and respect, positively impacting my overall performance.

My mental health greatly improved, and I found academics less stressful. In addition, I learned to prioritize my physical needs, such as eating nourishing food and getting sufficient sleep. This transformation had a profound and positive impact on multiple aspects of my life.

My goal is to provide a unique style of movement coaching that emphasizes connecting with your inner strength and exploring your body's capabilities. Everyone deserves the benefits of regular movement, discovering what feels good, and unlocking their full potential. My services are open to all, regardless of background, current level of movement, physical limitations, gender, or sexuality.
